Two Games you probably can’t play!

I’ve about 20-odd projects on the go, this week, so you’ll have to excuse the lack of blog entries, and even a decent AGameAWeek game.

Most of this week was spent trying to roll a dice! (die, whatever)
I figured that, with 4 frames per roll, I’d need around about 200+ frames of animation.
I tried to work out all the animations, and it drove me crazy!
Then I rested, and eventually worked out a way to do it, without bothering to animate it, which was a lot simpler to do.
..
Then the game idea I’d had actually turned out to be really rubbish, and the whole dang thing got scrapped.

Aw well, what can you do!

So, within a mostly wasted week, take a peek inside and see what I actually did do!

1. Raining Bombs [LG Cookie / Touchscreen J2ME Java]

A Tanks clone for the Cookie.
I was originally planning on regular hills, but the cookie couldn’t really handle it.
Poor wee thing!
So, instead, I opted for rectangles since they’re much easier and quicker at drawing.

Hmm.. What kind of rectangles would look good?

Aaah! Buildings!

And with the buildings came a little rule change.
Rather than the usual “Hit your opponent”, I set the two tanks (turrets?) atop 13-block-high buildings. The aim is now to destroy the opponent’s tower, so the tank falls below the bottom of the screen.
First one off the floor is the loser!

Simple, but effective!
You can Download Raining Bombs here.

2. Blockman DS [DS!]

I mentioned a while back that Platdude’s Retro Collection 2 seemed to have run out of steam. I’m not really sure why that happened, but looking back on the collection now, the 4 games that were in there weren’t really fantastic to start with.
So, I guess it was inevitable, really.
Ho-hum..

Still, I made a half decent Blockman clone, even if it is a little less colourful than the original!
Same levels as before. Just hop around, grab all the blocklets, and guide them all back home.
It’s a shame I couldn’t figure out what to do with the upper screen!

Hey, I just wanted to let you know that I am really enjoying “Blockman DS”. Please continue development on it. :-)

Also, it would really be cool to see a release of “Platdude’s Retro Collection 2″. If the lack of game ideas are what stopping you from further development, you could always look at your wall of games that you’ve developed for other platforms.

Here is an idea on how you can make those games fit into the whole “Platdude’s Retro Collection” theme. You can make the games lofi like you intended too, and replace the main character in each game with Platdude in present form or an other or even make him resemble the main character (I think you mention before that he would appear in the shape of a spaceship in one of the games you were making). The reason I say replace the main character in each game with Platdude, is because, IT IS Platdude playing the games (well, it is his Retro Collection) and he is imagining himself being inside the game and somewhat vicariously living through them. You could take the approach somewhat like “Retro Game Challenge” where you would have to reach some goal in one game before you could play the next. Once the goal has been achieved for said game, you will be able to play it fully anytime. Also, across all games you would share “health” and “lives” (because your living through the game vicariously), you could replenish your “health” and gain “lives” throughout all the games via “points” and random “collectibles”.

Anyway, these are just some quick ideas for “PRC2″ that I wanted to send your way.

Oh, if I can come up with an idea for what you can do with the top screen for “Blockman DS”, I’ll send you a comment.

Well, it would be great if my ideas for “PRC2″ would brew some more ideas and revive your interest in it once again.

I just want to say thanks for creating these great games and keep up the excellent work! And please make more DS games as I really enjoy all the ones you’ve made.

I think it’s all that’s needed for Blockman. I mean, the Windows edition is pretty much the same, but with a bit of extra color. The other “Worlds!!” was just a different set of sprites, and the same levels occurring in a slightly different order.
Nothing really magical about it!

If it’s part and parcel of a collection, then it’d look more.
Maybe I’ll restart that collection, actually.

I really do have a decent enough list of games to do, the main problem I was having was that I felt I was just retreading old ground.
eg, Blockman Forever is in the engine.
It’s pacman, but bigger.
But..
That’s it!
That’s all it was..
And, to be honest, the previous PRC had that, but smaller.. And the smaller version played better because you could see the whole arena.
Now you had larger “better” graphics, but a scrolling arena where you couldn’t see anything.

That’s not a better game, that’s a worse game for the sake of graphics.

And, once you realise that.. What else can you do with the games?
They’re just all going to be “same game, dodgier rules”

Maybe if I try all different games, then it’ll work better.

Whilst working with my Cookie, there’s been LOADS of game ideas that, for one reason or another, the cookie couldn’t quite handle.
So, perhaps I’ll have a play with those.

I’ll keep you updated!

(blimey, big post!)
