I’m a game developer, who usually spends about 16-or-more hours, per day, sat in front of a computer screen. I’m 32 years old.
You would probably imagine that, given both those facts, I’ve been through a fair number of laptops, over the years.
The truth is, I’ve never owned a laptop!
Heck, even my little sister, hater of 95% things technological, has been through three laptops!
But there it is. I never leave the house, so why bother with a system I can take outside? Forget that! Gimme a Desktop, any day!
And so it’s been for the past 32 years. Any time anyone’s needed help with a laptop, my quick and easy response has always been “Not a clue, never owned one!”
Today, that excuse has ended.
Today, I got a laptop.
it’s a cheap little thing from Very, so no doubt I’ll still be paying for it in about 3 or 4 years time, but at the minute it’s something that I’ve felt I needed.
See, for one reason or another, I’m finding it hard to get back into the “Settled down at the PC” swing of things.
Instead, I’m finding myself settled on the couch with an iPad. I’m writing newsletters, and tweeting away all day, and generally not coding anything at all.
Meanwhile any time I dare to touch the PC, I’m met with 100,000 updates, and a system so old and worn out that it can hardly cope with Chrome.
It was time for a change. Time for a new system. And I knew that if I didn’t act fast, I’d end up with a system that has bloody Windows 8 on it.
A quick browse through Very’s collection found a cheap and decent looking system. Ordered it at 16:30 yesterday, recieved at 12:49 today. Damn good service, even if it was 49 minutes late
… still waiting for my iPod Touch, though, so they’re not THAT great!
With any luck, I should find myself coding a proper amount of stuff, now that I’m nice and cumfy on the couch, with a laptop at the ready.
Look forward to me re-kickstarting AGameAWeek again, soon.
