So, that Switch 2 didn't turn up, this year, huh..?
-=-=-
Right now, the Asus ROG Ally is priced at £399 with pre-Black Friday offers, so since I'd been keeping that aside for Switch2, I figured what the heck, and took the plunge.
My first thought was "Who put the charge socket on the top? Now I have a big wire dangling out the top of my new handheld."
"Yay me, I'm charging!!!"
For comparison, the Switch dock has a hole in its bottom, which the dock sticks its pokey stick into.
Much neater.
I mean, come on.. Who has random holes in their head..?
..
.....
Oh yeah..
Hmmm.
Setup
So, my initial thoughts.
I had to register with Windows, I had to register with Asus.
I updated the OS, and updated the drivers.
I updated the Asus R.O.G. software,
Then updated Steam to download a few games.
Then I put the device back on charge again.
Because all of that was too much for the thing.
Woohoo! Modern Gaming!!!
This was very much a Windows experience. I've certainly not missed this, in my last few years of Apple Only.
Power
It's not as fast as the MacBook M2 or the iPad Pro M4, as far as JSE goes, but that's browser stuff.
Give it a nice fast paced native Windows game, and it'll whizz away.
GTAIV, Half Life 2 and AudioSurf were all running full speed at 1920x1080, with "looks good enough to me" quality, which is infinitely better the last Desktop PC I owned.
.. Though, that was over a decade ago, so .. *shrugs*
I guess I have to try a few more modern games, instead of .. you know.. similarly decade old games.
I should try a few more games!
Any suggestions, lemmie know!
Meanwhile, the "left unplugged overnight" charge went from 100% when I sat it down, to 80% this morning, so.. That's not great, if I'm honest. I don't want to leave it permanently plugged in at night!! I already have the iPad, iPhone and MacBook doing that.
Hmm..
Code : 0/5
Worked : 0/5
Fun : 5/5
Didn't code a thing. Had lots of fun.
Hurray!

I found me an Ally, it was on the Amazon,
And it came mostly empty, to fit the games on.
I had games in my library from back in the day,
So to Steam I did travel to download them, today.
[chorus]
I had to register Windows, I had to register with Asus.
I updated the O.S., And updated all the drivers.
I updated the Asus R.O.G. software,
Which helps you to navigate whatever's in there.
Then updated Steam to download a few games.
Then I put the device back on charge once again.
Because all the updating was too much for the thing.
This is the power of Modern Gaming!!!

I'm lying in bed, blogging my blog,
As the R.O.G. Ally is on charge again.
I've played G.T.A, and some Half Life to boot,
And AudioSurf is still awesome.
[alt-verse]
I wonder if maybe VR could be done,
How far can I push the technology?
I expect there'll be limits, but I might try to see,
If VR can be handled on this tiny PC.

[Dave's phone rings]
Dave: Hello? Yes... yes... I see... WHAT DO YOU MEAN I CAN'T DRINK COLA DURING THE SIGNING?
Green: Oh no...
Dave: But I need it for legal purposes!
Solicitor: (voice on phone) Mr. Parker, it's just a standard contract signing...
Dave: Nothing's standard when Cola's involved!
Green: Just agree to whatever they say, Dave.
Dave: Fine. But I'm bringing my emergency supply in my jacket pocket.
[Scene Two]
Int. Solicitor's Office
[Dave's twitching while reading the contract]
Solicitor: Now, if you'll just sign here...
Dave: Wait! This doesn't mention the Cola distribution system!
Green: It doesn't need to.
Dave: Or the ring-pull collection track!
Solicitor: The what?
Green: Just sign it, Dave.
Dave: Can I add some Cola stickers first?
Green: NO!
[Scene Three]
Int. Car Park
[Dave's celebrating with a can of Cola]
Dave: We did it! The house is mine!
Green: Finally? It's been, like 3 days. People would kill for a house sale to go through like that.
Dave: Now I can install my flag system!
Green: Please don't.
Dave: And the ginger cat can come visit!
Green: Dave, that was just a newspaper delivery cat. We don't even know where that came from.
Dave: But think of the possibilities!
Green: I try not to.
Dave: Next stop - COLA CASTLE!
Green: It's a three-bedroom semi-detached. It looks like a three-bedroom semi. It's not a castle.
Dave: Oooh, it will be!
Green: Uhoh..
[End credits roll while Dave attempts to stick Cola stickers on his new house keys]
